5 Ways to Prepare Your Electrical System for Summer

In the summer, energy usage increases. Therefore, spring is the perfect time to assess electrical use and identify saving strategies. You may save energy costs by getting your electrical services done for the summer.

If you see flickering lights, power surges, or other significant risks, including faulty wiring, buzzing outlets, or burning scents, consider these tips:

  1. Upgrade Your Light Bulbs

A qualified Los Angeles electrician is not necessary to change a light bulb. To save money, switch your old incandescent light bulbs out with LED ones if you still have some at home.

Similar to a 60-watt incandescent, a 9-watt LED bulb glows brightly. The burden on your electrical system is reduced because it consumes much less power.

Old, burned-out bulbs can be replaced one at a time, but replacing all your lights at once won’t harm you. You can quickly arrange far more energy-efficient lighting inside and outside your home.

  1. Maintain Your Air Conditioner

You should start planning for air conditioning services even if it is not hot yet. The usage of power is reduced with proper maintenance. The lifespan of your AC may be increased and capacity saved by carrying out essential maintenance activities like changing the air filters and hosing the exterior down.

  1. Install a Programmable Thermostat

With programmable thermostats, you may adjust the temperature based on your usage schedule. For instance, you may turn up the heat during work or when you’re away. When you know you won’t be home, you may turn up the thermostat during work hours.

Before everyone gets back, the thermostat may be set to start reducing the temperature. The same is true with central air conditioners, which may be set to only cool living areas. Vents in empty rooms can be shut down to save electricity.

  1. Ground All Outlets, Appliances

Install GFCI outlets (ground fault circuit interrupters) in every area where an electrical connection could come into contact with moisture or water, such as bathrooms, kitchens, garages, and basements. All significant appliances, including refrigerators, air conditioners, washers, and dryers, should be plugged into grounded outlets. Use only original equipment plugs for these.

A professional electrician should be consulted if you have a pool or hot tub to ensure that electrical connections are thoroughly grounded. In order to avoid shocks, burns, and maybe even severe damage or death, GFCIs trip the circuit if the current flow is out of balance.

  1.  Give Your Electrical System a Break

You will always need more electricity throughout the summer. Your electrical meter deserves a break as well if you go on vacation.

If you expect to be away for more than two days, turn off your electric water heater at the electrical panel. The refrigerator and air conditioner should be treated similarly. Several utility providers provide a free service, but very few homes use it.

The utilities who provide the service will send a professional to evaluate your home and advise on making it more energy efficient. If your local power provider has the option, test it out and ask them for their advice.
